About Out of The Box

Hi! I’m Olga, creator of Out of The Box. As a former escape room designer and now a parent (with a keen interest in child development), I wanted to share the thrill of logic adventures with kids.

I’ve created themed puzzle sets for rent that engage different senses, promote critical thinking, and encourage teamwork.

I look forward to bringing a logic adventure to your home or classroom!

FAQ

What age group are the boxes designed for?

In short, our puzzles are suitable for children aged 4 to 11 years old.

Kids as young as 4 years old can solve the puzzles with the guidance of an adult. They should be able to complete all the steps independently and reach the final answer. The puzzles are designed to encourage active participation—children will always need to take actions to uncover solutions. Opening the padlocks and the safe is a particularly thrilling part of the experience! Basic skills required include counting to ten and recognizing digits.

An optional but enjoyable aspect of the game is searching for the puzzles, which can be hidden around the room or apartment. They are all packed in the same fabric, making them easily recognizable as puzzles.

As children grow older, they require less guidance and enjoy increasing difficulty levels, ensuring a challenging and rewarding experience.

I’ve also been told (by those bold enough to admit it) that while solving the puzzles, the parents and teachers had just as much fun as the kids! However, when designing these sets, my primary focus is on the children. I choose themes that captivate their interests and create puzzles that actively engage their senses, helping them develop essential skills during their formative years.

There’s no reading involved in any of our puzzles, making them accessible regardless of the child’s literacy skills (and language!).

How long does the game typically take to play?

The game usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes to complete, but this can vary depending on several factors:

  • the age of the players
  • the level of assistance provided
  • whether you choose to hide the puzzles and HOW WELL DO YOU HIDE THEM

Occasionally players may get stuck on a particular puzzle, especially if they are fixated on an initial idea. I know it very well from my times designing escape rooms and watching teams cracking the code. But don’t worry – each box contains the “Top Secret Solutions” folder, which can be a real lifesaver!

What if we get stuck?

Don’t worry—inside the box, there’s a folder with all the solutions.

Sometimes, players may get stuck on a particular puzzle, especially if they become fixated on an initial idea. I know this well from my experience designing escape rooms and watching teams crack the code. But don’t worry—each box contains a “Top Secret” folder, which can be a real lifesaver!

In the folder, you’ll find the following for each puzzle:

  • a list of contents (and a photo of them), which is helpful to check if something has accidentally been misplaced, like hiding under the sofa or getting mixed up with other puzzles’ contents
  • a step-by-step solution that includes the final digit

You’ll also find the final password in the “Top Secret” folder, so if the safe doesn’t open, you can easily identify which puzzle has a mistake and attempt to solve it again.

What if something doesn’t work?

I carefully check every set between rentals, so everything should be fine.

However, sometimes things happen, like a battery dying after I send it out. In that case, you can always replace it—there’s a spare parts box in each set. You’ll also find a key to the safe there (so you can open it and access the batteries).

For puzzles containing small pieces, I pack a few extras, just in case one gets lost in the heat of the game.

I have a gift I wanted to put in the safe, but it’s too big. What now?

No problem—I’ve got a solution for you!

Inside the box, you’ll find a (really) big bag that you can close with the provided padlock. The key to the padlock goes into the safe—voilà!

How many players per game?

For each game, a team of 3-5 kids is ideal. For each box, you can have as many players as you want!

If you have a large group, just split them into teams. Each of the 8 puzzles is easily resettable—you can do it in less than 3 minutes. This way, teams can solve different puzzles at the same time (preferably in different rooms to avoid spoilers).

Do you offer delivery?

Yes! We deliver to any address in Switzerland using the Swiss-Express “Innight” service by Swiss Post. This way, we can ensure the box arrives on time.

You can return the box the same way—inside, you’ll find a return label ready to go. Just stick it on the box and drop it off at the nearest post office before closing time.

The boxes, like the fun inside them, are quite large, so the delivery cost is CHF 36.50 per one-way.

If you prefer to avoid the delivery fee, you can also pick them up yourself in Zurich (8041)

How many puzzles are there?

There are eight puzzles.

To open the safe, you need to crack an 8-digit password. Each puzzle provides one digit.

The puzzles are individually packed, so it’s clear what goes with what. From my experience running escape rooms, I’ve learned that younger players often have great imaginations and might try to combine items in unexpected ways. That’s why I decided to use eight separate puzzles, each packed in a fabric bag. This allows you to hide them around the house, adding extra excitement (and a bit more time) to the game.

All the puzzles together weigh between 10 and 15 kg.

In what language are the puzzles?

None! The puzzles don’t use words, only symbols and visual clues.

This way they can be played by kids speaking any language and even by mixed groups.

It was also important for me that puzzles would work for kids that haven’t yet learned to read.

The short game instruction and puzzles solutions for parents/teachers are in German and in English.
